This half term our topic has been 'Once Upon A Time' and working within this theme, we have been designing and making fairy tale structures with a difference: they were made from food items! We began by looking at the amazing work of artist Carl Warner for inspiration (see his website here http://www.carlwarner.com/foodscapes/), and then thought about how we could tie in our designs with the school healthy eating initiative.
Food is not the easiest medium to work with when you are trying to construct buildings, so we spent some time looking at different joints and thinking what 'edible glue' we might use. The children came up with great ideas including tying together components with split vanilla pods, cheese strings and strawberry laces. Edible glue ideas included icing, and also flour and water paste.
I have to admit that when our grocery order arrived at school on Wednesday morning, I did wonder what on earth I'd let myself in for (with a small amount of panic!) But the children never cease to amaze me, and the results were even better than I could have imagined. Super work, Sapphire Class! Enjoy the photographs
