Research shows that the better the children are at detecting rhymes, the quicker and more successful they will be at learning to read. Evidence suggests that a familiarity with rhymes helps children to detect phonetic constituents of words.
In fact literacy specialist, Mem Fox, tells us in 'Reading Magic' that children who can say eight rhymes by four years of age will likely be among the best readers by the time they are eight years old.
In Teal Class, we're going to do much better than eight rhymes! As part of our commitment to learning nursery rhymes, we have introduced the 'Mother Goose Club'. The children will learn one new rhyme each week, with the aim of learning thirty rhymes (with signing!) in their first year at school. This will also help prepare the children for the new National Curriculum, where children need to recite poetry by heart.
Each term we will hold a Mother Goose Club class performance and for every five newly learnt rhymes (whether spoken, verbalised or signed), the children will receive a special certificate from Mrs Packer!
If you would like to support your child at home, please find below the list of nursery rhymes that we will be learning this year. The links at the bottom of this page contain the music and the written lyrics.
